What Is
Positive Psychology All About?
Dr. Martin Seligman is known as the Father of Positive Psychology with
his books “Learned Optimism” (1990, 1998, 2006), “Authentic Happiness”
(2002), “The Optimistic Child” (1995), and others which led to his being
selected as the President of the American Psychological Association, and
director of the Positive Psychology Network at the University of
Pennsylvania. He felt that “The time has finally arrived for a science
that seeks to understand positive emotion, build strength and virtue,
and provide guideposts for finding what Aristotle called the ‘good
life’.”
He says:
“Life inflicts the same setbacks and tragedies on the
optimist as on the pessimist, but the optimist weathers them better. As
we have seen, the optimist bounces back from defeat, and, with his life
somewhat poorer, he picks up and starts again. The pessimist gives up
and falls into depression. Because of his resilience, the optimist
achieves more at work, at school, and on the playing field. The optimist
has better physical health, and may even live longer. Americans want
optimists to lead them. . .
. The good news is that pessimists can learn the skills of optimism and
permanently improve the quality of their lives.” (Seligman, Learned
Optimism, page 207 (2006)

An understanding of people gives you a tremendous edge
in any interaction involving people. This seminar is designed for
improving communication with co-workers, customers, employees, bosses,
or friends. By observing and understanding people's behavior, you can
read their approach to handling problems, people, pace and change, and
rules and regulations. Knowing a person’s approach to these areas gives
you amazing ability to better communicate and influence the outcomes of
the interaction. This informative and synergistic workshop based on the
behavioral-based DISC model, and is a powerful process for leadership
teams, as well as senior management.
Purpose: The Dynamic
Communication seminar is designed to increase your communication
effectiveness, decrease tension and stress, and increase understanding
of self and others. Relationships will be enhanced in work, business,
family, social and recreational situations.
Objectives:
1. Know the history of the universal behavioral
language called DISC
2. Know the benefits of applying a behavioral model
3. Understand your own behavioral design
4. Recognize, understand and appreciate others' behavioral designs
5. "People read" all four behavioral factors, High and Low, in minutes
6. Adapt for enhanced communication, understanding, and relationships
Delivery: This is a
half-day to one-day seminar, depending on your objectives and number of
participants.
Understanding people's point of view or attitude is to understand what
drives and motivates their behavior. Your Attitude Is Showing helps
people see what their own point of view is. Six attitudes and values are
assessed, based on the Personal Interests, Attitudes and Values
assessment. These same six show up as "roles" in every culture know to
man. Thus, these six attitudes are fundamental to the human way of
being. Which attitude(s) most affect how you see the world and thus
react to it? It is very useful to understand the reason behind why
people to do what they do.
Purpose: Increase
your ability to see another person's point of view as a driver and
motivator for their thinking and behavior. Also, understand you own
points of view and how they act as filters to understanding other
people's views.
Objectives:
-
Understand each of the six fundamental attitudes and the interaction
of each
-
Know which attitudes drive your life, actions and decisions
-
Understand others' viewpoints and be able to interact convincingly
by seeing the world through their eyes
Delivery: This
seminar can be delivered in a half-day or one-day format. It is the most
powerful when combined in one day with the behavioral model, DISC, found
in the Dynamic Communication seminar. Each participant receives a
personalized report on their six attitudes, values, and interests.
